Happy Bhogi Festival 2023: Bhogi festival is the first day of the Pongal festival which is celebrated in honor of Lord Indra, “the God of Clouds and Rains” and deity Surya “Sun”. According to the Gregorian calendar, Bhogi is celebrated on January 13 but regularly it is celebrated on January 14. In Tamil Calendar, this day corresponds to the month Maargazhi. Bhogi and Makar Sankranti festival is mainly celebrated in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka.

Bhogi Celebrations

The significance of Bhogi is lighting a bonfire, in which the people will burn agricultural wastes, and logs of firewood to keep them warm during the last lap of winter. Part of the celebration is the boiling of the first rice of the season consecrated to the Sun – the Surya Maangalyam. The Bhogi festival is related to the day preceding Thai Pongal, Makar Sankranti, Bihu, Lohri, Vishu, and Vaisakhi.

On the occasion of the Bhogi Festival, a special puja is performed on the first day of Pongal before the cutting of paddy. Farmers worship the sun and the earth by consecrating their plows and sickles with sandalwood paste. It is with these dedicated tools that the newly-harvested rice is cut.
